Please join us for a book launch for The Origins of Color, published by Raw Meat Collective. Project collaborators Vincent Tiley and Bryson Rand, will be joined in conversation by moderator Evan Garza to explore their Queer history / painting project. Join the event on Facebook here
For more than a year, the artists have been working together on “The Origins of Color.” The project is interested in creating a parallel between the mythic history of Indian Yellow pigment (a pigment falsely believed to have been made from cow urine), the coexistence of fact and myth in Queer histories and the oral accounts of the lives of cultural producers of the early Gay Liberation movement and the AIDS era, and the once popular “piss scene” that replaced the gay cruising culture during the AIDS epidemic.
The book includes all the photos, paintings, and historic documents, with an introduction by curator Evan Garza, Director of Rice Public Art at Rice University.
It is an edition of 300, perfect bound and full color. Its a beautiful book that represents a great portion of current Queer contemporary art and follows a beautiful timeline of artistic history.

Yellow Peril is pleased to launch the 2018 season with Charmed, an explorative, Queer group show curated by Kyle Quinn, founder of Raw Meat Collective (New York, NY), featuring Sarah Anderson, Fred Attenborough, Peter Clough, Kris Grey, Juan Manuel Gudiño and Ernesto Renda. The opening reception is Saturday, March 17, from 6PM – 9PM and the show will run through Saturday, May 12. Dates will be announced later for a series of events at the gallery related to the show.
Ranging in mixed media from painting, sculpture, video and publication, Charmed reflects our dark undertones of counter Queer culture and emulates the things that keep us breathing within Queer Contemporary art.
“These contemporary artists offer a fresh lens into current Queer perspectives,” curator Kyle Quinn underscores. “They represent a charming and embracing light within dark times of oppression and hetero-normative atmospheres.”
During the run of Charmed, RAW MEAT COLLECTIVE will present a library of zines and artist publications, as well as newly released photographs. Raw Meat Collective has been a publisher since 2014 and participates in many artist books fairs across the country. Raw Meat’s publications are held in The Whitney's Bulwark Special Collections archive for their artist books, along with other private collections. The Collective is an on-going curatorial platform developed by Kyle Quinn.
